Counseling & Therapy
If you’re here, we first want to applaud you for your courage. Recognizing that you need therapy is an important first step. Our counseling and therapy locations across Michigan are here to provide a supportive shoulder, listening ears, and constructive guidance as you work toward restoring your wellbeing.
With counseling at Wellspring, we meet you where you’re at. From your first appointment, we’ll seek to understand what brought you to therapy, and what you want to accomplish. Based on that information, we’ll walk alongside you to apply the best counseling approaches and techniques that meet your goals.
While therapy will be different for each individual, our ultimate aim is to work through the challenges in your life, whether past or present, to help you be your best self.
We are here for you; however, this page is not monitored 24/7. If you are experiencing a mental or physical health crisis, please dial 911 to seek immediate assistance. Should you wish to have follow-up care when the crisis has resolved, we would love to hear from you and provide that support.
Counseling Services
We offer comprehensive and inclusive therapy for people in a variety of life situations. Most of our counseling services accommodate both in-person and online (virtual) counseling and therapy appointments.
Individual Counseling
You'll work one-on-one with a counselor, who will offer support and guidance. Confidentiality and listening without judgment are hallmarks of our therapists, so you can express yourself freely and openly to get the most out of each session.
Couples Counseling
Marriage and couples counseling offers those who are committed to each other a safe space to work through individual or joint issues that impact their relationship.
Family Counseling
Attended by all or some members, family counseling can help improve communication, resolve conflicts, navigate changes, and ease stressful events. It often deepens connections and helps your family cope better with future challenges.
Concerns We Can Work On
Therapeutic Approaches
Our counselors are well-versed in many different methods and modalities of therapy, and tailor the approach to each person’s needs. These approaches are offered at Wellspring locations throughout Michigan.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
A form of talk therapy, CBT is a very successful therapy that challenges negative, unhelpful, and/or unhealthy ways of thinking and/or behaving, and teaches coping skills to alter these thoughts and behaviors. It sets clients up to manage their mental and emotional wellbeing long after their last session.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR therapy is an extensively researched and proven treatment for trauma. It is also an effective PTSD treatment. EMDR treatment changes how unprocessed traumatic or triggering experiences are stored in your brain, breaking down and updating these memories so that they no longer cause distress.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT is similar to CBT in that it focuses on changing negative thinking and behaviors, but DBT has an added focus on acceptance of a client’s experiences.
Interpersonal Therapy
Formally known as Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), this evidence-based approach is used to improve relationships and social interactions with others. It can help with social isolation, unfulfilling relationships, grief, big life transitions (divorce, retirement, moving), and highly conflicting relationships (romantic, friendly, work or family).
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational interviewing is used to encourage positive changes in behavior when someone isn’t sure if they want to change, or lacks confidence in their ability to change. It has been proven effective for certain disorders and as a supplement to CBT.
Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidenced-based, short-term parent coaching program for young children with behavioral problems. It is designed to increase positive parent-child interactions, and equips parents to confidently, calmly, and consistently manage their child’s behavior. With PCIT, a therapist observes and coaches the parent in real time while the parent and child interact. If the session is in-person, the therapist is in an observation room with a one-way mirror or in another space watching a live video feed, while the parent and child are in a playroom. If it’s a virtual (aka telehealth) appointment, the therapist will watch via video and coach the parent through headphones.
Play Therapy
Geared toward kids, play therapy uses playtime to identify and work through a child’s challenges. Oftentimes kids can’t articulate their issues or process their emotions. Playing is also used to help a child learn coping skills and redirect inappropriate behavior.
Psychodynamic Therapy
In psychodynamic therapy, an individual works with a therapist to deeply understand how they feel and think. With this understanding, they can then make better choices to lead healthier, happier lives.
Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
Much like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, TF-CBT focuses on changing negative thought patterns and behaviors, but also addresses past traumas. TF-CBT is evidenced-based for youth up to 18 years of age. The model incorporates a non-offending support person who is provided with psychoeducation regarding trauma and will be involved throughout the process. The youth identify this support person. A trauma narrative is developed and the youth is able to share this narrative with the support person. The youth will learn about trauma and its impact on the brain and body, triggers and coping skills, as well as how to desensitize from the traumatic experience and enhance their future.

Session Formats & Access
-
How do I schedule an appointment?
To schedule an initial counseling appointment, please call or email us. An intake specialist will gather some basic information and help arrange your first appointment. The initial session will begin with an assessment process. This is an opportunity for your counselor to get to know you, and learn about your needs and goals. Through this assessment process, your therapist will work with you to develop a plan for your treatment.
-
Do you offer virtual counseling?
Yes, we understand that professional counseling is not one-size-fits-all, so we offer virtual/video sessions online in addition to our in-person appointments.
-
What is a typical session frequency?
Generally, people are seen once a week when they are starting treatment and session frequency typically reduces over time until discharge. Session limits are generally established as an insurance benefit. If you are interested in being seen more than once a week, you would need to check with your particular insurance company — or we could check for you if you call.
-
What does an average therapy appointment look like?
Counseling sessions typically last one hour and are often directed by the patient’s current struggles, concerns or challenges. Based on this, a counselor would ask questions to guide the conversation, ask the patient to provide more insight into their feelings, and provide them with guidance to consider following the appointment.
Diagnosis & Treatment
-
Do your therapists specialize in specific issue areas?
We can provide professional counseling on a variety of specific issue areas, but it is important to note that not all specialties require a certification. For this reason, be sure to indicate if you would like support with a specific concern when you call for an appointment.
-
How do I receive a diagnosis for what I am struggling with?
Before counseling begins, you will complete a thorough assessment that will result in an initial diagnosis. A good treatment plan always begins with an accurate diagnosis. Over time, the diagnosis may be refined. Our treatment is considered evidence-based, which means the methods we employ have been tested for validity and reliability, resulting in positive outcomes. If the diagnosis is particularly difficult, then psychological testing may help.
